This year, up until the day we had planned to leave, we weren't sure we were going to make it. The recent eruption of the Eyjafjallajokull Volcano in Iceland, that had shut down much of the air traffic across Europe, threated to prevent our trip and possibly, from the show taking place. Luckily there was a break in the ash cloud and we were able to take off without issue.

Lisa Morantz and Neal Wiser at the Morantz Ultrasonics stand.

We had a great time meeting people in our industry from all over the world, and showing them the myriad of benefits derived from Ultrasonic Cleaning. Here is a list of the countries we met people from: (Note: the U.S.A. should be on this list too).

Even better, being at the tradeshow afforded us the opportunity to see many of our clients and to catch up with them. It’s always exciting for me to learn more about their businesses and how they are using their Ultrasonic Machines.

Amelia from Portugal let me know that she is using the machine primarily to clean parts for two major shipyards, and also for computer cleaning. She admitted that starting out 6 years ago trying to convince her clients to clean their computers with sound waves was not without its challenges. Now, she claims confidently, this is a niche market that is an in-demand service.

Sven from the Netherlands let us know that the blind cleaning machine he purchased from us 4 years ago paid for itself right away, and continues to be a revenue generator. While his company has cleaned many blinds in the machine, the entire staff came back to learn a bit more about how they can better market the ultrasonic cleaning service, and how they can diversify into other services such as contents restoration, parts cleaning and more.

We also were happy to see Adriana and her father, Gabriel, from the Canary Islands who have our SM-200 (Super Mighty One) system.

Neal and I, in an effort to not have to repack the M-115 (Mighty One) machine that we brought to the show, decided to put it up for sale. Sure enough, one of the fire restoration companies we had met two years previously at Interclean, purchased the machine. Below is the lucky new owner, Noel from Clean and Construct in Belgium. Before taking the machine back with him, he brought a few items to try out. Here you seem him pre-treating a greasy part that cleaned up beautifully.

Greasy Part cleaning in tank.

When not at the exhibition, we spent hours walking around, experiencing this vibrant city.

The beautiful architecture looks much the same as it did in the 1600’s.

On the last evening of the show, the city wide celebration of Queen’s Day began. A national holiday in honor of the Queen’s birthday (although not the current Queen Beatrice but her mother’s birthday), the entire city became a sea of orange shirts, wigs, boas, balloons and more. I was told that Queen’s Day is the only day anyone can sell anything without a permit, so in essence the entire city is one big flea market. Maybe next time I’ll bring more machines to sell on the street at Queen’s Day (LOL!)

Overall, a great trip! We are looking forward to Interclean 2012.

Kraft Foods Cleaning with Morantz Ultrasonics

There are many uses for our Ultrasonic Cleaning Systems, but just when we thought we knew them all, along comes something new. A few months ago I was contacted by an energy optimization company that works for many large companies including, Kraft Foods Inc. Kraft had a specific part for their baking ovens that needed to be cleaned, and the pressure washing/hand cleaning they were doing wasn't working. The question posed to me was "Can you clean them?" My answer: "I don't know until we try". So that's just what we did. These parts were sent to me for a test clean, and sure enough, the ultrasonic process worked wonderfully. The parts were functional again, saving not only time in cleaning, but a tremendous amount of money in both labor and replacement costs.

In the past couple of months I personally visited a few of the Kraft bakeries to install custom equipment and train their staff on the operation of the system.
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_sJcFrv5DfgY/S6FZ7nidAPI/AAAAAAAAAKw/REzNHvdWbio/s320/IMG_0366.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5449735904855654642" /><img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_sJcFrv5DfgY/S6FaM95rebI/AAAAAAAAAK4/0ei0_QfHdmY/s320/IMG_0367.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5449736202916428210" />

These photos are from the Chicago operation, which as I was told during my visit, is the largest bakery in the world! I have no doubt as each of their ovens was literally a football field long (that's Gridiron football for all you non US citizens reading this).

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_sJcFrv5DfgY/S6FbwyBp_mI/AAAAAAAAALA/LhKm8MLZ-Ic/s320/0_1.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5449737917715578466" />
One of the many Kraft Foods ovens.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_sJcFrv5DfgY/S6Fisl99ZGI/AAAAAAAAALQ/M-duBFWaTtg/s320/Lisa+at+Kraft+2.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5449745542340764770" />Yes I do look lovely in my hair net...not!

Kraft's need was specific, and therefore required a machine to be built to their specifications. While many times one of the standard Morantz models will work for an application (there are over 10 different shapes and sizes to choose from!), or at least one can usually be modified for an application, this time it could not. Accordingly, we built a specialized system for Kraft and worked closely with their engineers to be able to provide them with the best tool possible. Here's a photo of Kraft's new system now installed in their bakeries throughout the U.S.:
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_sJcFrv5DfgY/S6Ff4p-_S-I/AAAAAAAAALI/X4GvgPvGobk/s320/0_1.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5449742451042372578" />

The Kraft staff watching parts clean and learning the operation of the system. They were all very grateful they no longer had to spend tedious hours working on these by hand.
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_sJcFrv5DfgY/S6FjQQtBitI/AAAAAAAAALY/tk1Weyada6Y/s320/Watching+parts+clean+at+Kraft.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5449746155107879634" /><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_sJcFrv5DfgY/S6Fja9Xcc_I/AAAAAAAAALg/6kMMhUsEM40/s320/Watching+Parts+clean+%232.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5449746338895655922" /><img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_sJcFrv5DfgY/S6FjmXcjwcI/AAAAAAAAALo/_BoHrp2TRsI/s320/Watching+parts+%233.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5449746534874988994" />

If you company has a special part that needs cleaning, and you can send it to us, we will be happy to offer you a FREE trial cleaning. Just this week I mentioned this to a potential client and they happily sent me this steamer oven full of calcium deposits to trial.
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 214px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_sJcFrv5DfgY/S6FmPjhX6zI/AAAAAAAAALw/mj2qdjdkglY/s320/IMG_9442.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5449749441514302258" />
The company who owns this steamer (and many others like this) is paying to replace them 2 or 3 times a year at a cost of several thousands of dollars.

By running the trial at our facility, we were able to determine the proper cleaning chemical, temperature, process, power, frequency and machine size needed for the job.
The result was amazing. Take a look:

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 214px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_sJcFrv5DfgY/S6Fom5jUvxI/AAAAAAAAAL4/fvWuCa4bQO0/s320/IMG_9443.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5449752041588309778" />

Now, the company who is purchasing the ultrasonic machine will clean these ovens on a regular basis, charge nicely for the service (meaning they will make an excellent profit) but still save the client thousands of dollars. That's a true win-win.

If you have a part you would like us to trial clean, please contact me at lisa@ultrasonicmachines.com.

Window Blind Cleaning and Social Media

For many of us, social media has become a standard in our lives. With the proliferation of Facebook, Twitter and other networks, I find myself on the internet more than ever discussing all types of topics with people from all over the world. But who would have ever thought that WINDOW BLIND CLEANING would have been one of those topics?

Don't take my word for it. Check out Facebook and Twitter where I found these messages:

I hate cleaning wood blinds!!!, why did I have to get them everywhere in my house.

You could take em off & throw em in a tub…or buy a swiffer…I hate dusting blinds UGH!

Decided that cleaning window blind slats is right up there with silver polish; never gets done either

Took down blind to clean it...took hours!

Cleaning a mini blind? Don't bother. Its too hard.

Recently I came across a Blog which threw out the simple question:
What's The Best and Easiest Way to Clean Blinds?

Throughout the day, 21 people replied. Most people responded with their homemade bath tub type cleaning and dusting techniques and many admitted that their methods were the best you can expect to do with these methods, but not desirable. And all this frustration leads to people absolutely hating the job of cleaning blinds!

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 172px; height: 220px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_sJcFrv5DfgY/Sw2H4_sFxxI/AAAAAAAAAKI/qPVpfN_6qYw/s400/gitf-2%5B1%5D.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5408128140780619538" />

Here was my FAVORITE response:

When asked how to clean Yes there is a great way to take care of this problem! Make sure to read all the way through…even though this is easy, it is kind of detailed instructions.

What you do:
Mix a quart of vinegar, a small box of baking soda, in a bathtub about half to three quarters full of hot hot water.

You need a hammer for this part.

Take down all the horizontal mini-blinds in your home and hammer them to one inch pieces and set the pile on fire. Have the marshmellows handy! While your fire is getting the coals built up (because you can’t rush a great campfire) go online and order some vertical blinds, roman shades, or curtains for the windows in your home, all of which are easy to clean.Next, throw a beach towel over your naked bathroom window. Sprinkle some lavender oil or rose petals in the tub with the vinegar and soda water (which is great for the skin by the way) and celebrate your wise decision with a nice hot soak for your tired, stressed out, marshmellowy body.
All this to say, I think mini-blinds are God’s way of mocking humans and I have NO idea how to deal with them.
(WINK WINK HAHAHAHAHAHAHHHHHHAAAAAAAAAAAAA!)

No, I was wrong, here is really my favorite response:

Pay to get them clean, that’s the easiest.

And many, many people do pay to get them clean. There is an absolutely huge market that has proven itself time and time again to be profitable.

The blog went on to discuss ultrasonic cleaning for blinds and stated:

"There are many benefits of ultrasonic cleaning such as they eliminate pollutants, germs, bacteria and move dust. And the best thing of this method is that you can clean your blinds at reasonable price. Another great advantage is that with the help of this method you can not only clean roller blinds but other types of blinds such as vertical blinds, office blinds, wooden blinds, mini blinds and Venetian blinds can be cleaned perfectly." (See http://allshutter.cz.cc/different-ways-of-cleaning-your-roller-blind/).

Just yesterday I was on the phone with one of our clients in Italy. He told me he renamed the Baby Blind Cleaning Machine he puchased from us. Now he calls it "Money" because it has not stopped making him money.

Here are the reasons why:

Blinds have sold steadily over the past 20 years, and only continue to grow in popularity. In most countries, window blinds have overtaken curtains as the preferred window covering. Blinds have become more ornate, and at the same time, a well made blind is now both beautiful and expensive. Accordingly, the owners who spend thousands of dollars on new blinds are looking to protect their investment by maintaining them properly.

The problem with blinds is that they cannot be cleaned effectively with traditional scrubbing methods. Dusting moves dirt from side to side but rarely removes it. Then static electricity is created and more dust is attracted.

Cleaning in the bathtub or hosing down the blind in the backyard creates it's own challenges, among which are scratching, bending and pitting if the blind. Not to mention even if you get the top dirt off you cannot get the cords, ladders and tapes clean.

So if you have not already checked out Ultrasonic Blind Cleaning as a niche market service, that is both easy and profitable, give us a call. We'll be happy to show you how you can make money cleaning blinds...and if you don't believe me...check it out online.

It's been a very busy first quarter, complete with travel to The Cleaning Show in the United Kingdom, RIA tradeshow (Restoration Industry Association) in Palm Springs, California, Servpro of the Carolinas Conference in Charleston, South Carolina and Servpro of Penn Del Conference in Hershey, Pennsylvania. Throughout all of our travels, one thing has been clear...Ultrasonic Cleaning is now recognized, worldwide, as an extremely useful tool.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 267px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_sJcFrv5DfgY/Sce3J8oyLfI/AAAAAAAAAIo/oQa0i92xFCo/s400/Servpro+March+The+Booth.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5316419266658053618" />

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_sJcFrv5DfgY/ScgBshF7nJI/AAAAAAAAAJA/d4uB7cDGI6Y/s400/Arnaldo+and+Dad.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5316501224419990674" />
Just this past weekend I had the privilege of speaking to Servpro franchises from Pennsylvania and Southern New Jersey.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 267px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_sJcFrv5DfgY/Sce5_AT5L9I/AAAAAAAAAIw/8ezg3LquByI/s400/Front+of+Room.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5316422377200496594" />
While many of these franchises already own our equipment and have realized the benefits of high profit margins in content cleaning, others were seeing ultrasonics for the first time. I was happy to share with the group information about how the technology is not only applicable to fire restoration, but the diversification possibilities into medical cleaning, industrial parts cleaning, window blind cleaning, golf club cleaning and more. This aspect is very appealing to all types of business owners. Especially with the current recession, it is important to have a way to compensate for a revenue stream slow down by being able to easily pick up another.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 267px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_sJcFrv5DfgY/Sce6N7OpnBI/AAAAAAAAAI4/jM2UxzclQWE/s400/Right+Side.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5316422633534364690" />
One of our Servpro clients who purchased our Super Mighty One (SM-200) model and Drye Rite cabinet this past Summer, shared their story about their very first job with the ultrasonic machines. After 4 hours of dry time, she would remove the computers and fill the dryer with more newly cleaned computers.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 267px; height: 400px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_sJcFrv5DfgY/ScgHLca29NI/AAAAAAAAAJw/8qy4LawVm1Y/s400/Dryerite.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5316507253299672274" />

Because of the quick turnaround, Servpro was able to walk back into the client's office on Monday morning, set up the computers, and get them back to work. Now that's service...and that's ultrasonics.

A Year In Review and Plans for 2009

In my last entry, I mentioned a new client and his cheery outlook on the New Year (see http://morantz.blogspot.com/2009/01/new-year.html). At a time when many people would rather crawl into bed, pull the covers up, and be woken up when it's 2010, his optimism was almost overwhelming.

As a result, my thoughts turned towards my own New Year. Was I excited about what my work had in store for me this year? Was I ready to execute new plans we had in place? Would working in my family's business continue to help me realize my own dreams and potential? Was I viewing this year as a time for opportunity, even though we are facing a worldwide economic crisis?

Before I could look forward and answer these questions, I reflected on the past year; all of it: the good and the bad.

First, The Good.

In 2008 we had a tremendous growth year. In the 12 years I have been with the company, I can report that on many levels, this was among our very best. Not only in terms of sales, but also because of the tremendous progress in completing what had been a 2 year overhall of our company from the ground up. New processes that had been put in place finally reached fruition. This has made fulfilling orders easier, more timely and with much higher quality.

Our staff, although slightly reduced in size, is efficient and seasoned. I am fortunate to work with such an amazing group of individuals (including two of my own family menbers) who are extremely loyal to our organization.

We have one staff member, Debbie Balliet, who runs our Western Regional Office in Las Vegas, Nevada, with whom we celebrated her 25th anniversary with the company.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 380px; height: 271px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_sJcFrv5DfgY/SXjUJahQrHI/AAAAAAAAAH4/4ohzNQ0DcOg/s400/Debbie.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5294214620176755826" />

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 214px; height: 320px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_sJcFrv5DfgY/SXoSN-5ZvSI/AAAAAAAAAIA/DpV-U1jeSGw/s320/Debbie%27s+Award.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5294564343358799138" />

Joe Leggett in Operations celebrated his 31st year with Morantz!

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 119px; height: 133px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_sJcFrv5DfgY/SXjT_sbECVI/AAAAAAAAAHw/CKyWumrsh-k/s400/Joe-Leggett-Operations-.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5294214453183908178" />

We also added on a new training and distribution center in Orlando, Florida! This is a very exciting venture as Orlando continues to grow as a hub for commerce and entertainment. Floridians who are interested in our equipment, or any client for that matter who would like to escape the winter blahs or bring the family along during training, can make arrangements to see a demonstration or train at the new facility. Even more exciting, we are offering training in SPANISH at this location and now have people visiting from all over Central and South America.

My amazing travels .

I'd be remiss if I didn't mention our growing distribution in Australia. I had one of the greatest experiences this year traveling to Australia to meet and work with our distributor at the BSM expo, formerly known as Ausclean. I was honored to be a guest speaker at this expo which is considered in Australia to be "the trade show" of our industry. (See http://bsmexpo.com.au/seminars and scroll down to the 3rd speaker--that's me!).

The people I met were eager to learn about Ultrasonics and the benefits that it could bring to their service businesses.

Our Australian Distributors:
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_sJcFrv5DfgY/SXSzlh0YIpI/AAAAAAAAAHg/hKIjFjb-5kk/s400/IMG_6011.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5293052919381762706" />

Showing the Machines in Action:
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_sJcFrv5DfgY/SXSzzpg3U4I/AAAAAAAAAHo/SZp39RF91TM/s400/IMG_6018.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5293053161965572994" />

From fire restoration to medical cleaning to golf club cleaning, there has been tremendous support. Did I mention that Australians are among the nicest people I have ever met? In addition to our extremely knowledgeable instructor, Larry Myslicki, we welcomed a new guest speaker, Barb Jackson. Barb is known to many in the industry as "The Queen of Contents" and she certainly lives up to the hype. Her extensive first hand knowledge of contents cleaning allowed her impart valuable information to our class to take them through what I call the "nitty gritty" of fire restoration content work. I am very happy that Morantz has worked with Barb this year. She definitely helps to flesh out the training for anyone who is entering the Fire Restoration training arena. Here are some photos from our Seminar.

Larry Myslicki leading the class:
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_sJcFrv5DfgY/SXSsrEW7syI/AAAAAAAAAGg/yZSjg8GpczU/s200/IMG_6272.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5293045317971456802" />

Barb Jackson accepting a Certificate of Appreciation from Stan Morantz:
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_sJcFrv5DfgY/SXSb86axFEI/AAAAAAAAAGQ/1ko-kiW66xE/s200/IMG_6268.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5293026932843156546" />

Class attendees watching a demonstration of Ultrasonic Techniques:
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_sJcFrv5DfgY/SXSscfl5QNI/AAAAAAAAAGY/wbfTLSpSW9Q/s200/IMG_6261.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5293045067583930578" />

Other Good Things This past year Morantz Ultrasonics and I personally have become involved with supporting a wonderful charity organization by the name of Kisses for Kyle. I joined the board of directors for this non-profit to help raise money for children with cancer and their families. Morantz continues to sponsor many of the wonderful events the organization puts on throughout the year.

Over the holidays, I visited our local children's hospital along with my 7 year old daughter, Sara, the President of Kisses for Kyle and some fellow board members. We delivered wagon loads of gifts to the children that hopefully helped to lift their spirits.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_sJcFrv5DfgY/SXSx-smJ86I/AAAAAAAAAHY/7xc3nHz54Ww/s320/IMG_6440.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5293051152748376994" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_sJcFrv5DfgY/SXSxuRN3QRI/AAAAAAAAAHQ/Fm10vnUrliM/s320/IMG_6443.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5293050870520824082" />

It was an amazing experience and it makes you stop and think how incredibly lucky you are to just have a healthy child. If you're interested in learning more about this wonderful organization, please visit www.kissesforkyle.org.

Here is the bad. Well, no one can have a perfect year, right? Unfortunately, we had to let our Distributors in both the U.K. and Greece go. It was tremendously unfortunate and disappointing on many levels that I will not get into here, but we have exciting plans to announce for 2009 very soon. Stay tuned....

Plans for 2009. So...where has all this reflection led to for the coming year? First, it helps me to remain positive by acknowledging the progress we have made. It also helps the entire organization to stay focused and "sow the seeds" we have planted for growth both domestically and internationally. These are definitely motivating factors to keep us all moving forward and excited.

Here's what we have coming up: - Several new franchises have expressed interest in working with us - our Canadian distributor plans to unveil his new state-of-the-art facilty for training this year - and we are unveiling our brand new Digital Generators which will provide more power and greater functionality (more to come on this so keep checking back). - We have opened a new European support center for equipment service as well as adding on new distribution - We are also in the process of planning our next "East Coast" Firesonics Seminar...And there is much more!

Despite the challenges we are all facing, 2009 is shaping up to be an exciting year. I hope you will join in the journey with us.

A New Year

Happy New Year! I said this to a new client by the name of Jim who I spoke to on the phone this week. His reply was, "This is going to be the best year ever!!".

WOW! His response really resonated with me. Here is a guy that recently lost his job with a company he worked with for over 10 years. At a time when he has every right to feel confused, angry and even resentful; amidst the daily news reports of doom and gloom; he remains utterly and fantastically optimistic.

When I asked him how he could be so positive, he told me, "I have been waiting all my life to take control and not work for someone else. I was just too scared to do it before. Getting laid off was the best thing that could have happened to me because now I will set my own hours, be my own boss, and take control of my own destiny."

...And he will. I have personally seen this scenario play out over and over again. People who have diligently worked for another boss for years finally having the opportunity to step out on their own and take charge. For many, it is a truly liberating and thrilling experience. They finally have the chance to live out their dreams and define what success means personally for themselves and their families. Although there is hard work involved with starting your own company, once things take off, our clients are then financially rewarded in ways that could never dream of as someone else's employee.

Good luck Jim...I do believe you are right. This may just be the best year of your professional life.

Automotive Parts Cleaning with Ultrasonics

When it comes to cleaning Automotive Parts, the Ultrasonic process does an exceptionally good job. Whether it is grease, dust, rust, carbon, or other dirts, in most cases, these can be removed quickly and easily without hours of hand scrubbing or use of harsh chemicals.

I wanted to share with you some pictures from recent jobs that we've done.

Most recently, I had a client visit and he brought with him an intake manifold from a Ford Mustang engine. He was specifically looking for a way to clean parts prior to powder coating them. Here are the "before" pictures:

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp0.blogger.com/_sJcFrv5DfgY/SI94Fkhly8I/AAAAAAAAADo/QhsNHWbyVsE/s200/Lisa%27s+BackUp+7-28-08+046+(Small).jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5228529729499679682" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp2.blogger.com/_sJcFrv5DfgY/SI93_BhhyFI/AAAAAAAAADg/zOxWPtTLl2w/s200/Lisa%27s+BackUp+7-28-08+045+(Small).jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5228529617024960594" />

Here are photos of our client checking out the finished result:

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp1.blogger.com/_sJcFrv5DfgY/SI94pe8jIfI/AAAAAAAAAEA/dD141dcqq5A/s200/Lisa%27s+BackUp+7-28-08+052+(Small).jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5228530346477429234" /><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp1.blogger.com/_sJcFrv5DfgY/SI94kbgjrSI/AAAAAAAAAD4/9WpimxkHDZg/s200/Lisa%27s+BackUp+7-28-08+049+(Small).jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5228530259655372066" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp0.blogger.com/_sJcFrv5DfgY/SI94gOQnltI/AAAAAAAAADw/cBb0Gp1ktE4/s200/Lisa%27s+BackUp+7-28-08+048+(Small).jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5228530187379381970" />

Depending on the type of dirt we are dealing with, and the make up of the parts to be cleaned, we may work with either a 40kHz frequency (our standard) or a 27kHz frequency to get more agressive. The rule of thumb is that the lower the frequency, the larger the bubble that is being produced and the more powerful the implosion in the Cavitation process. We also have 4 different cleaning solutions that we utilize depending again on the dirt and the part.

Take a look at the following before and after photographs of other automotive parts we have cleaned with Ultrasonics:

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp1.blogger.com/_sJcFrv5DfgY/SI-DZYALoII/AAAAAAAAAEI/R9sheOYOXrg/s200/Nascar+rims+024+copy.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5228542164363616386" />

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp2.blogger.com/_sJcFrv5DfgY/SI-FQqpnW4I/AAAAAAAAAEo/zsA17EFXz_c/s200/ENGINE+PART+clean.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5228544213773671298" /><img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp2.blogger.com/_sJcFrv5DfgY/SI-FKqtnyBI/AAAAAAAAAEg/-tw5oJDGMIg/s200/ENGINE+PART+DIRTY.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5228544110711261202" />

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp0.blogger.com/_sJcFrv5DfgY/SJIU-u76DvI/AAAAAAAAAFg/NISzs6wsgdY/s200/Stans-Backup-7-23-07-004.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5229265185314311922" /><img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp1.blogger.com/_sJcFrv5DfgY/SI-G-aLDUaI/AAAAAAAAAFI/4pBDBu-Re-w/s200/Stans-Backup-7-23-07-after-006.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5228545971507960018" />

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp3.blogger.com/_sJcFrv5DfgY/SI-Icw17-oI/AAAAAAAAAFQ/_f7ITPjAYkA/s200/Stans-Backup-7-23-07-040.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5228547720129280642" /><img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp0.blogger.com/_sJcFrv5DfgY/SI-IhbnWyYI/AAAAAAAAAFY/YM7FV32rjPw/s200/Stans-Backup-7-23-07-after-057.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5228547800330324354" />

A few of the parts you see above are piston heads and exhaust lifters from a motorcycle. Like everyone else, I too sometimes eat at my desk, drop crumbs in the keyboard and have general dirt build up over time. Unlike everyone else, I have unlimited access to ultrasonic machines to clean my keyboard.

Before starting, I decided to take some photos so everyone could see this quick and easy process. I also took some readings both before and after the cleaning so that everyone could appreciate the cleanliness difference that ultrasonic cleaning really makes. (Note that I enlisted the help of Josh Perlson, our digital media designer, so when you see a hairy hand or arm you'll know it's his and not mine!).

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_sJcFrv5DfgY/SGEcFab4nMI/AAAAAAAAACE/qvVaxy7zGt8/s400/dirty-swabing.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5215480722792946882" />
(Click on this photo to see a larger version with more detail of my dirt!)

First, the swab test. We took a pre-swab for an ATP (Adenosine Triphosphate) test that measures bioluminesence or signs of bacterial life. This count gives a starting point and is a great way to verify that our cleaning is working. As you can see, the count on my keyboard was 181 (dirty!).

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_sJcFrv5DfgY/SGEfPPxaITI/AAAAAAAAACM/0eaA24bIgTs/s320/high-test-result.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5215484190264009010" />

Most people don't appreciate that their keyboards can be a breeding ground for germs. In fact, there has recently been much discovered and reported about in the news on how keyboards at nursing stations have been one of the main causes of the spread of MRSA in the hospitals both domestic and abroad. (To see a report on this utilizing our cleaning systems in the U.K., visit: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/magazine/7187856.stm.)

Next, the keyboard was submerged for one minute in our M-115(Mighty One)ultrasonic cleaning system which is regularly used for cleaning electronics of all types.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_sJcFrv5DfgY/SGEf85ejiKI/AAAAAAAAACU/OJg3kxLVrUk/s320/cleaning-keyboard-1.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5215484974553335970" />

After removing the keyboard and drying it with both our Heated Blow Dry Gun and in our Drye Rite electronics drying station, we performed another ATP swab test. This time the result was only 29 (which is great because in the food industry anything under 30 is considered to be excellent).

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_sJcFrv5DfgY/SGEkAt4KrUI/AAAAAAAAACk/svAgPEYxnVg/s320/low-test-result.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5215489438205521218" />

The result is that I am now typing this blog from a keyboard that looks better, functions better and is verified as clean. If you are currently working in, or considering ultrasonic cleaning for offices, hospitals, schools and other public areas, I would recommend you consider ATP testing along with your ultrasonic process to show your clients the difference that ultrasonic cleaning makes.

New clients visit for training

Today we welcome new clients to our family of Ultrasonic Cleaners. While they have not picked a name for their new company yet, David Morson, along with his fiancée, Cindy, his father Lamar Morson and Lamar's wife Hannah Morson all completed 2 days of basic training at our Philadelphia headquarters and are headed back home to take delivery of their new 3-in-1 system.

Training is among my very favorite activities at Morantz Ultrasonics. While I do the majority of the teaching during training, I also make sure I spend time at the beginning of each session doing plenty of listening. This is my way of knowing what I really need to teach my clients to position them best for success. Believe me, it’s not the same for everyone. I’ve never approached our training as a set, static class. I individualize each training session for the needs of that client. This is the reason we conduct our basic training classes one on one and not in a group, classroom style.

For example, Dave and his family are a new, start-up business. They are planning to diversify into many different areas of ultrasonic cleaning including window blind cleaning, fire restoration and parts cleaning. To teach them everything they needed to know, I set aside two days. Beyond the basic know-how of the machine and cleaning techniques, we spent time talking about the family’s goals and expectations for the business. This helps me to make recommendations on things as diversified as marketing, pricing, and even the legal structure of the company (I am a lawyer so I always ask about the nitty, gritty details to make sure everything is being thought through). However, if for example, I was training an existing fire restoration company, I would not approach the training the same way. Their needs are very different, as is each client’s needs.

I truly believe that training and support is the key to success in this business, and while each client has different needs, we are available for all of them. I told David before he left that he should feel free to call me and ask questions often….especially in the beginning when he is just getting started. He admitted that he is a bit anxious about everything but feels better knowing he can reach us should he need to.

Best wishes to the Morson family on their new venture!

Note: Shortly after this post, here is the note we received from the Morson's:
Dear Stan, Lisa, Heather, and the entire Morantz Team.

We wanted to thank you for your hospitality, generosity, and wonderful experience we had coming to your operation. We look forward to embarking on a wonderful journey in the world of ultrasonic cleaning. The professionalism of each of your employees was unmatched. I am very excited to be able to update both our existing clients and other visitors on a real time basis about the events, innovations, techniques and news about our company and about the Ultrasonics industry.

For years we put out a newsletter. At the time, this was an effective tool for communicating information. However, with information being disseminated more and more rapidly, and with news changing daily, my hope is that this blog will be better than any newsletter could possibly be…and certainly more useful and relevant for our readers.

Thanks for visiting and check back frequently.
